Bonjisi Tafunga

Tafunga, a talented artist from Zimbabwe, embarked on his artistic journey straight out of school, driven by a passion for stone sculpture. His older brother, the late Lameck, served as his greatest influence and mentor, renowned as a master sculptor and a creative force among the second generation of artists.

As a member of the esteemed Bonjisi family of Zimbabwean sculptors, Tafunga represents the third generation of contemporary Shona stone art. Born in 1982 as a twin to his brother Garikai, he grew up in Ruwa, receiving his education in both Ruwa and Tafara. Under the guidance of his brother Lameck, Tafunga immersed himself in the art of stone sculpting, drawing inspiration from the teachings of the renowned Nicholas Mukomberanwa, a co-initiator of modern Shona art.

Since starting his own artistic journey in 2000, Tafunga has developed a distinctive style, combining the classic elements of the masters with his own dynamic and balanced forms. His sculptures beautifully depict the human body, conveying emotional narratives that captivate viewers. Tafunga prefers working with challenging stones such as Springstone, Cobalt, and Opal, allowing him to achieve a refined and appealing finish.

With his exceptional talent and unique artistic vision, Tafunga has showcased his works in numerous exhibitions worldwide. He is a frequent participant in live workshop shows across Europe, where he continues to inspire and engage audiences with his remarkable stone sculptures.
